Marlena Zuber

Marlena Zuber lives and works in Toronto. She makes maps, illustrates books and magazines, produces drawings and paintings and is a member of the glam-pop indie band, Tomboyfriend.She also assists in running the non-profit art program, Creative Works Studio. In 2008, Marlena partnered with writer Stacey May Fowles to produce the illustrated novel Fear of Fighting, published by Invisible Publishing. In 2010 she completed a large series of maps and drawings for Stroll, a monograph of Toronto from a flaneur’s perspective, by Shawn Micallef, published by Coach House Books.

Pete Ryan

Pete Ryan works hard, and it is apparent in his work. He uses traditional media to make his paintings, including acrylic paint, silkscreens, block prints, and airbrushes. He has strong conceptual ideas, can make swearwords sound completely inoffensive, and also has knack for some pretty corny puns. Definitely check out his blog to see his process work. You may well learn something useful.

Edel Rodriguez

Edel Rodriguez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. He majored in painting at Pratt Institute (BFA) and Hunter College (MFA). He has worked on picture books, covers for novels, stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, and on posters for films and Broadway shows. He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker magazine and was an art director at TIME magazine for over a decade.

He documents his creative process on his blog and Facebook page; there’s a wealth of inspiring images to look at and learn from. Also, I enjoy following updates on his work, photos of events and sketches from his travels.

Martha Rich

Originally from Philadelphia, Martha Rich lived the typical, suburban life – until she followed her husband to Los Angeles where, just short of a picket fence and 2.5 children her average American life unraveled. To cope with divorce, fate lead her to an illustration class taught by the Clayton Brothers. They persuaded her to ditch the pantyhose world, quit her human resources job at Universal Studios and join the world of art. She graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design and is currently based in Pasadena obsessively painting underwear, wigs, lobsters, and Loretta Lynn.

Suck At Life by Lawrence Yang

Lawrence Yang wrestles with informational abstractions by day and paints by night. Influenced by graffiti art and traditional Chinese painting, he employs ink, marker, and watercolor, as the permanence of this media adds a sense of immediacy to his work. Lawrence’s paintings make use of color to communicate atmosphere and emotion, and they are concerned primarily with creating order out of chaos (and vice versa). Lawrence once ate an entire bag of Fun Size Three Musketeers™. He lives in San Francisco with his imaginary pets, Cholo and Binky.

Corey Waurechen

Corey Waurechen is a self-taught painter and printmaker. He currently lives in Waterloo, Ontario, where he works in his home studio, primarily as a portrait artist. With a belief that an artist can never stop improving, Corey is constantly striving to improve his skill in several different artistic disciplines. While his paintings most often deal with from-life subject matter and the human figure, his printmaking usually takes a much more fanciful turn. For inspiration in his printmaking, Corey looks to literary sources, creating book covers and illustrations for his favourite novels. The graphic nature of block printing and the more natural shapes and colours of painting allow for him to explore endless creative possibilities. To further his artistic horizons, Corey also studies Paleontology and works from animal specimens, particularly birds, as often as possible. Corey’s work can currently be seen in the Winter 2011 edition of Creative Quarterly Magazine.

Paige Reynolds Art

Paige Reynolds is a Canadian visual artist based out of Toronto, Ontario. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph; she studied fine art at Sheridan College as well as 3d modeling and visual effects at Humber College.

Paige’s artwork is surreal, dark, figurative, metaphorical and emotional. Her main influences include horror, fear, the human condition, morality, injustice, anatomy and the macabre. She works with acrylics, mixed media, photography, digital painting and photo manipulation. Paige has been involved in art exhibits in both Canada and the US and her art has been featured in numerous publications and blogs.

Paige also applies her artistic and creative skills in the entertainment industry working as a visual effects artist. She has worked as a visual effects artist in shorts films, music videos, documentaries, and feature films. The titles will be announced throughout this year as the films are released. Along with illustrator/graphic designer Justin Erickson, Paige has founded a company called Phantom City Creative focusing on entertainment marketing for film, television and music. Paige has also created a jewelery line called Frills & Morbidity.

Paige is available for editorial illustration, commission artwork, album art, book covers, photography projects, 3D modeling, visual effects & motion graphics.

Mariah has a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Sheridan College, and also studied Visual Art at the University of Victoria. She has done freelance illustrations for The Walrus, Modern Dog Magazine and Kessels Kramer and Active Healthy Kids Canada. She has also published two Children’s books, one of which was written by Nicholas Brotman. Mariah likes to manipulate different media, including sculpture, collage, painting, photography, drawing and digital work. The challenge of combining these different materials is a bit like hosting a party with a bunch of strangers, and coaxing them to get along and be friends. Usually the outcome is surprising and satisfying. Thanks for taking a look!

Schneiderworks the Art of Thomas

Human consciousness occupies a myriad of frequencies. There exists a tiny space between the conscious realm and subconscious sleep, the wake of life, or the slipstream of consciousness. This often overlooked and briefly occupied slipstream is a very powerful space – a space where time loses its grip and mythologies are born. This experience fascinates me. I make a daily effort to be observant and diligent while in this space and to try to record what happens there.

More often than not, I am occupied with a sense of falling that accompanies the loss of consciousness, or the sense of confusion brought about by the mind trying to define its state and realizing that it is neither awake nor asleep. In the time that it has taken one to read these last couple of sentences, the mind may slip into dreamtime. Once in a great while and with great effort, one may find them self conscious of the transition and make note of it. For as Kahlil Gibran wrote, “And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.” I have found it to be a fantastic and mysterious space, where physics and canons are turned on their heads, colors become as logical as numbers, and events move too fast for language. This is the threshold where the memories of the day rush and elbow to try to get a spot in the cinema of one’s dreams. The ones that make it through are immediately transformed into something that defies tenets of ratiocination. Keeping in line with the methodology of thousands of years of tradition, it is from this well of mystery that I drink for my imagery. I believe that this space is the birth place of art. Through digging as deeply as possible and blending the images of other frequencies of consciousness with concepts from my daily experience, my work can represent more of my total self.
